Maxi Dresses. Maxi dresses, maxi dresses, maxi dresses. It's been about 2 years since they've resurfaced in fashion, but only now are really starting to pick up any steam. If only in blogland.
When I was 16 I was absolutely OBSESSED with maxi dresses. I had two different skirts that I wore every opportunity I had, a dark denim Snug dress and a cargo-style Fiction number in khaki with white and gray mesh detailing. (Side: I remember
begging my mom to buy me a pair of the Geek Boutique extreme flares with the Chinese writing on the bell of the leg. Anyone remember those? At the time, so wicked; Currently, wouldn't be caught dead them.) Toronto peoples may or may not remember these particular brands, but they were associated with rave culture. Nope, I was not into raves, but I am forever indebted to Jungle for introducing me to Hiphop.
Anyways, these were the days of retail when you could put items on 'Lay Away', which was the only way I could afford to buy either Maxi dress. At the time I made approx $7/hour working as a Cashier at Food Basics and these skirts went for around $150. At 16, this was the equivalent of purchasing a
Proenza-Shoulder PS1 Bag.
God, I can't even tell you how many shitty jobs I've worked just to afford to keep up with clothing, shoes, and having a life. Hands down, the most boring/worst/want-to-stab-yourself-in-the-face job I've had to do was Telesurveying. At 17, I begrudgingly took this job as a way to finance a trip to New York. (As a result, I always try to be incredibly polite to tele-employees, only because I understand how awful people feel they can treat workers for the 'inconvenience') After two months of dragging myself to work and setting aside funds, I blew half of what I saved the day before we left because, "you have to go to New York in style." I'm not going to lie, my little teenage eyes went buckwild at all the boutiques and merchandise available and I spent all of my money by Day 2/5. At the time, my best friend were in the same boat (ie. broke), and so we made a pact to pool funds and split $2.99 pasta dishes at Sbarro until it was time to go home. Some of you may know this diet as 'The Shopaholic'.
The best part is that, even so many years later, I still make these type of pacts with myself. For instance, in exchange for the
MiuMiu wooden wedges, this month's lunch menu consists of a selection of fine $1.99 Campbells Soups. Hey, the good life is expensive. My new MO = "Broke with nice shoes".
The moral of the story being that Maxi dresses are hard to pull off. See the image assortment attached. Happy Friday!
