Pringle of Scotland Animation by David Shrigley

My friend James of Motioneering posted this earlier in the week, but let's pretend that never happened and you saw it here first. (Haha thanks James - sucker!)

Pringle of Scotland is an old-school luxury knitwear manufacturer. Established in 1815, Pringle enjoyed a successful run as one of Europe's finest knitwear brands. In 1967, company holders made a few bad business transaction, which led to weird design, a loss of the brands identity, confused consumers, and thus a loss in sales. In 2000, the brand was sold to Hong Kong-based Fang & Sons Company, Ltd. The Fangs felt Pringle deserved a new lease on the fashion life, so they risked a small fortune and began to redevelop the company.

Nowadays, Pringle is seen on the high fashion runways of London, many a-famous-celebrity-and-artist (Hi, like the Ryan McGinley produced short featuring Tilda Swinton on the PS website), and in cute animated cuts like the video above, by Glasgow-based artist David Shrigley. In other word, the Fangs have really invested effort into Pringle and produced a fresher, younger brand image. Check the vid, it's way too cute, very 'now' (whatever that means). My favorite part of the ani is Garold walking the runway, falling and yelling 'Leave us alone!' in a wimpy Scottish accent. Go Pringle.

Bob Noorda knows Baseball

Bo Jackson knows Baseball, Bob Noorda knows Design.

Who is Bob Noorda? Well, Bob Noorda was an internationally acclaimed graphic designer who died on January 11, 2010. Bob Noorda is also the fellow who introduced a wide-sweeping Modernist aesthetic the entire New York City subway system. You know, the subway that all other North American cities aspire to replicate? More importantly, he's the guy responsible for creating a culture icon (them there those subway "Brooklyn Bound", "Manhattan Bound", etc. signs) , the signs of which I always snatch at least one of during every visit. Hey, they make the best souvenirs. Arguably, it was Mr.Noorda's love of all things minimalist that put Helvetica , every designers darling typeface, on the map. Today, variations of Helvetica exist in everything from the Madrid Subway line to the Canadian Government official type to Macintosh OSs.

Helvetica goes International

Lately, I've been doing a lot of New York City dreaming and typography has become a growing interest. These are some of the things that I like to think about while at work, around town, you know, out and about just being me. So thanks Bob Noorda, you made this post appropriate, fitting.

Jeffrey Campbell x LF Alexa Wedge

Photobucket

Jeffrey Campbell Alexa

After waiting for over a month, I was sent my pair of Alexa's in the wrong color.
Can you imagine opening up a box all stoked out of your mind and then getting the wrong shoe?
Heartbreaking.

Anyways, check the auction and feel free to ask any questions.

Florida Florals

Somewhere along the fashion line (damn you, ASOS!) I decided that I should get a Floral Blazer for Spring 2010. Albeit trendy, it'd be a bright addition to the wardrobe and definitely something different.
However, I can't shake the idea that you have to be a beachy-leggy-dirty-blonde Australian girl from Brisbane to pull this kind off this style of garment.
On this side of the hemisphere, I'm almost certain - unless you really have the right stuff or look like Whitney Port - it looks a little too Miami Vice meets Boca Raton Retirement Community.

New Fashion Rule: When in doubt, skinny jeans and mad high platform heels.

Thoughts?

(PS. Love this blazer.)

Maxi Maxi Maxi Dress Dress Dress

Maxi Dresses. Maxi dresses, maxi dresses, maxi dresses. It's been about 2 years since they've resurfaced in fashion, but only now are really starting to pick up any steam. If only in blogland.

When I was 16 I was absolutely OBSESSED with maxi dresses. I had two different skirts that I wore every opportunity I had, a dark denim Snug dress and a cargo-style Fiction number in khaki with white and gray mesh detailing. (Side: I remember begging my mom to buy me a pair of the Geek Boutique extreme flares with the Chinese writing on the bell of the leg. Anyone remember those? At the time, so wicked; Currently, wouldn't be caught dead them.) Toronto peoples may or may not remember these particular brands, but they were associated with rave culture. Nope, I was not into raves, but I am forever indebted to Jungle for introducing me to Hiphop. Anyways, these were the days of retail when you could put items on 'Lay Away', which was the only way I could afford to buy either Maxi dress. At the time I made approx $7/hour working as a Cashier at Food Basics and these skirts went for around $150. At 16, this was the equivalent of purchasing a Proenza-Shoulder PS1 Bag.

God, I can't even tell you how many shitty jobs I've worked just to afford to keep up with clothing, shoes, and having a life. Hands down, the most boring/worst/want-to-stab-yourself-in-the-face job I've had to do was Telesurveying. At 17, I begrudgingly took this job as a way to finance a trip to New York. (As a result, I always try to be incredibly polite to tele-employees, only because I understand how awful people feel they can treat workers for the 'inconvenience') After two months of dragging myself to work and setting aside funds, I blew half of what I saved the day before we left because, "you have to go to New York in style." I'm not going to lie, my little teenage eyes went buckwild at all the boutiques and merchandise available and I spent all of my money by Day 2/5. At the time, my best friend were in the same boat (ie. broke), and so we made a pact to pool funds and split $2.99 pasta dishes at Sbarro until it was time to go home. Some of you may know this diet as 'The Shopaholic'.

The best part is that, even so many years later, I still make these type of pacts with myself. For instance, in exchange for the MiuMiu wooden wedges, this month's lunch menu consists of a selection of fine $1.99 Campbells Soups. Hey, the good life is expensive. My new MO = "Broke with nice shoes".

The moral of the story being that Maxi dresses are hard to pull off. See the image assortment attached. Happy Friday!

Haiti Earthquake Relief

To break from the typical aesthetics of this blog, I'd like to post some information on the simple ways you, my lovely readers, can help the people of Haiti cope with the after effects of Tuesday's devastating earthquake. Let's collectively do what we can to help. Pick your charity of choice and, instead of spending the money you would ordering out dinner or buying a new dress, help on people in absolute desperate need. The situation is critical and any little bit helps.

Donate $5 to Salvation Army by texting "HAITI" to 45678 (CBC.com)

Donate online to Partners in Health - mobilized, organized and on the ground

Donate to Doctors without Borders

Donate directly to Haiti Yele Earthquake Fund

Isabel Marant Patchwork Henley

Isabel Marant S/S 2009 Henley in quilted Americana style.
Patchwork, sans the denim-on-denim trend, I am feeling.

Timeout!:
Dear internet, what can you show me in this same vein of awesome that isn't $400 USD?
Thanks, Donna.
End Timeout

Style.com announced that Isabel Marant is to open up US-flagship in early 2010 in NYC's SoHo neighborhood, specifically on the corner of Broome/Greene. Common sense tells me that doors to the shop will open roundabout Fashion Week (February 11-18). Coincidentally, a good friend is driving out to NY that weekend and offered me a seat. You see, that weekend happens to fall on a Provincial holiday (Family Day!) and, since it's close to my born day, I might be able to pawn this off as a birthday present to self. Although unlikely, I = scheming. Who wouldn't? I love NY.
